Thoughts from the Gym Floor

Updated: May 20, 2025

I usually refrain from gym selfies because, well, they look like this.

I’m beet red, and my body is doing absolutely nothing that could be reframed as a sparkle or a glow. And if it looks like I just got my ass kicked—it’s because I did.

I laid sprawled out on the floor after the workout (yes, I’m still one of those people—forgive me), trying to recover and mentally recap what the hell just happened.

The recurring thoughts running through my head during the workout were:

Why does this feel so hard?

What’s wrong with me?

I used to be such a good runner.

I’m so much slower now.

Maybe I should start running more often.

But when would I do that?

I really can’t run like I used to.

One of the most difficult things about getting older—my expectations haven't changed, but my body has. Even when I give 100%, I feel like I’m only getting 75 in return.

As my heart rate slowed, I caught my breath, stared at the ceiling, and thought…

So what?

I thought about my “shitty” running. But was it really that bad? I pushed as hard as I could today. Why does anything else matter?

Why do I keep comparing today’s effort to past results?

That’s when it hit me:

The hardest part about getting older isn’t that we slow down—it’s that we still expect ourselves to perform like we didn’t.

But effort still matters.

What holds us back or moves us forward usually starts in our heads. And if we can shift the way we measure success, we might find we’re doing better than we think.

That’s the shift I’m working on—measuring success by how I keep showing up now, not by what I used to do. In other words, learning to ask myself: “So what?” a lot more often.

If you’re giving what you’ve got and still wondering if it’s enough… it is.

So get back out there, stop giving yourself such a hard time, and remember:

Your 100% still counts—even if it looks different than it used to.

If you’re feeling that tension between who you were and who you’re becoming—you’re not alone.

That’s exactly why I created the FitSister Group Coaching Program.

It’s for women in midlife who are ready to stop measuring success by outdated rules, and start building strength, confidence, and habits that actually work now—not back then.

Spots are limited, but the waitlist is open. Click below for program details.
